I confess. I fell for the entertainment tactics of the talented hamsters long before I fell for the Kia Soul. When I first drove a Soul, I was already a fan because of their great marketing. And then the houndstooth seats and red exterior were introduced. If you’re a college football fan of the “Roll Tide” sort like I am, then you were over the moon for this vehicle before ever even driving one. When folks asked me what I loved about the Soul, the things I stated were more “happy” things, not details about engines and amenities. And then came the 2017 Kia Soul Exclaim Turbo. Now, I have lots to talk about.
In an effort to offer a sportier option, Kia added a 201-horsepower turbocharged engine which produced a little more umph in the Soul’s performance. The engine was upgraded to a 1.6-liter and even so, the fuel economy is a heartier 28 mpg combined (city/highway). Also, the 2017 Kia Soul Exclaim Turbo has a new 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) for better engaging and smoother driving. We also see sporty features all around the exterior such as the 18-inch wheels, chrome grille surround, Soul tailgate badging and dual chrome twin-tip exhaust.
“We wanted to provide loyal Soul lovers and new buyers a sportier option,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning KMA. “The 2017 Soul Exclaim with its turbocharged engine gives the car’s fans another wonderful choice from an already wonderful line-up.”
Other New Features on the 2017 Kia Soul Exclaim
A fairly basic vehicle to begin with, the Soul Exclaim welcomed a few new amenities that really stood out to me. The leather-wrapped steering wheel gave the feeling of a more expensive vehicle while the innovative technology brought it to modern-day expectations (push button start, Kia’s UVO Infotainment platform, Harman Kardon audio, navigation and touchscreen sytems).
Kia offers a couple of key safety features in my opinion: Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Blind Spot Detection. Three trim levels are available on the 2017 Kia Soul and they are outlined below:
- Base – manual or automatic 6-speed transmission.
- Soul Plus with 6-speed automatic.
- Exclaim turbo with the all-new 7-speed DCT.
A couple of new exterior color choices, a redesign on front and rear fascias including headlights, the addition of dedicated USB ports and more seat programmability for passengers round out what will now be the 2017 Kia Soul’s on the road.
What Do I Think of the 2017 Kia Soul Exclaim?
Adding the extra zip to the drive with the new engine capabilities and turbo factors is definitely a plus. While folks aren’t buying the Soul to be a hardcore sports car, they do appreciate having a reliable feeling of power to jump out in traffic and merge quickly. The fascias are more appealing and I’m glad to see technology upgraded. When you factor in the KIA WARRANTY and the safety features (especially with some new options), I love the Kia Soul even more. It’s a great starter car, commuter vehicle and small family vehicle.
Have you driven the 2017 Kia Soul Exclaim? It’s worth shouting about. If you’re in the market for a luxury car, the 2017 Kia Cadenza is one of the BEST!
